Internal linking basics

Internal links connect your own pages so visitors and search engines can find them and understand how they relate.

An internal link goes from one page of your site to another. You control every one of them, which makes them the cheapest lever in search strategy.

Why they matter#

  • Discovery. A crawler finds pages by following links. A page nothing links to is an orphan page and may never be found.
  • Context. The words of a link, see anchor text, tell a search engine what the target is about.
  • Importance. Pages linked from many places, and from your home page, signal that they matter. Pages many clicks from the home page, see click depth, are found less often.
  • Visitors. A link at the right moment moves a reader toward an enquiry.

How to do it by hand#

  1. List your money pages. The services, products and enquiry pages that earn leads.
  2. Find your supporting pages. Guides and articles about the same topics.
  3. Link supporting pages to money pages where the text naturally mentions the service, with words that describe the target.
  4. Link money pages to the helpful guides a buyer would want before deciding.
  5. Check the menu and footer. Key pages should be reachable in two or three clicks.
  6. Fix dead ends and broken links. Every page should offer a next step, and a broken link wastes the visit.

A simple structure#

Group pages by topic. One main page covers the topic broadly, see pillar page, and narrower pages link up to it and across to each other. The main page links back down to them.

Common mistakes#

  • Linking every page to every other page. Too many links dilute each one.
  • Using "click here" or "read more" as the link words.
  • Linking only from the menu. Links inside the text are read as more meaningful.
  • Forgetting new pages. Each new page needs at least one link in from an existing page.

A ten-minute audit#

Pick your most important service page. Search your site for its topic and note every page that mentions it. How many of them link to the service page? Add the missing links where they read naturally, and repeat for your next most important page. Small, steady passes beat one big rebuild.

PageSoar's guide how to add internal links shows how it handles this.
